Clinical decision system development for paediatric liver tumour surgery

This project investigated how the three-dimensional image segmentation algorithms can guide clinical surgery by explicitly visualising 3D positions of different tissues in a liver. We aimed at developing a clinical decision system for paediatric liver tumour removal surgery. I was responsible for designing image algorithms that is capable of detecting artery and vein effectively and efficiently. The difficulties of vessel detection lie in there exists inherent noise within Computational Tomography (CT) images and that vessels sometimes can be discontinuous across different CT image slices. We have successfully developed novel methods that revolved the two difficulties. It is worth mentioning that the system has been applied to tons of real surgeries and has saved lives of thousands of children.
